Wesley House which is located on the grounds of Stratford Methodist Church (London) opened in the winter of 1965/66. It was originally set up as a student hostel accommodating Christian overseas students studying in London, who were enrolled at the London Bible College or other academic institutions.
As times have changed and the general housing needs within the local community has become more acute, our aims have also change accordingly, and we now offer affordable accommodation to a broad spectrum of people through our Mission Partner Just Homes.
Our criteria is no longer along religious grounds, but to meet the needs of our local community, and in doing so share the love of our dear Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
With Newham being the most multi-cultural borough in Europe, and arguably the borough with the highest homelessness in London, means that Wesley House is surrounded by a broad range of nationalities, which gives us a great opportunity to touch the lives of people on a truly global scale. A vision, which certainly helps us to fulfil the Lord's "Great Commission".
Just Homes
Wesley House are currently in partnership with Just Homes. Just Homes aims to provide help for homeless people seeking to rebuild their lives by targeting for two particular groups:
Unemployed men who can access state benefits (have recourse to public funds)
Women and children who do not qualify for state benefits (have no recourse to public funds).
Just Homes Mission Statement is that:
People should be able to live in a place where they feel secure and safe, where their privacy is protected free from fear of intimidation or the fear of eviction.
People should have a good place to live regardless of their income, including entitlement to benefits.
People should be able to move on with their lives by better access to the job market.
People should respect where they live, and work on achieving good and supportive relationships with others in the same accommodation.
People should be able to move on from temporary accommodation into more permanent accommodation.
We value difference and inclusiveness. We will seek to provide equality of opportunity, and will take positive steps for those who are marginalized in access to housing and support.
